Response of moth communities (Lepidoptera) to forest management strategies after disturbance

چکیده

Spruce forests face many threats such as climate change and bark beetle outbreaks. Yet, dynamics have a long co-evolutionary history strongly linked to spruce forest structural dynamics. Disturbed sites resulting from outbreaks therefore should not be regarded degraded land, but early successional stages following natural Three post-bark-beetle disturbance one closed-canopy site in the Bavarian Forest Ĺ umava National Parks were investigated with focus on moth communities. The three disturbed had undergone different post-disturbance management regimes, being treated by salvage logging, while at other two deadwood was kept forest. To avoid spread of beetles, however, dead trees either gouged or removed. aim determine how moths can found undisturbed if differences community composition explained regimes. results highlight that increase diversity, especially favouring species are associated open shrub habitats. Many rare endangered benefit outbreaks, indicating accepting is an important part conservation management. Post-bark seems minor effect

Forest Management Strategies to Minimize the Impact of the Gypsy Moth

Gypsy moth is an exotic insect from Europe and was introduced into the United States in the mid 1800s near Boston Massachusetts. The moth spread throughout the Northeast and remained there until the 1930s. The following years saw rapid migration throughout the mid-Atlantic regions. By the 1990s, the moth was found throughout the northeast, mid-Atlantic regions, Michigan, and currently inhabits ...

—The response of forest insect communities to disturbances such as timber harvest likely will depend on the underlying ecological assembly rules that affect community structure. Two competing hypotheses are niche assembly, which seeks to demonstrate significant species-environment correlations, and dispersal-assembly, which seeks to demonstrate spatial autocorrelation in the absence of species-...

Forest Response to Chronic Hurricane Disturbance in Coastal New England

Question: Hurricanes and cyclones cause a wide range of damage to coastal forests worldwide. Most of these storms are not catastrophic in ecological terms, but forest responses to storms of moderate intensities are poorly understood. In regions with a high frequency of moderate hurricanes, how does variation in disturbance intensity affect the magnitude of ecological responses? Location: Nausho...
